Open a register session

Start a shift by counting the opening float and opening the register.

Required permission: pos.session.open

Before you begin

  • The register exists and is in state closed. A register in maintenance or disabled cannot be opened.
  • You have pos.view, pos.sell and pos.session.open.
  • The register has no live session. A register can have only one session open (or closing, counted, waiting for review or approval) at a time.

Steps

  1. Choose Point of Sale > Point of sale > Launch POS. The till opens full screen with a card for each register: code, state, name, session and last sync. Register workspace and My session open the same screen.
  2. Check the header. ONLINE means the till is connected; OFFLINE means sales will be queued.
  3. On the card of your register, press Open session.
  4. Count the cash in the drawer. Either type the Opening float, or fill the denomination table (one box per note or coin: 1000, 500, 200, 100, 50, 20, 10, 5, 1, 0.5, 0.25).
  5. Check Counted opening cash. It is the sum of face value times count.
  6. Press Open session.

What happens next

  • The system numbers the session from one central sequence (for example S-10052) and sets the register to open.
  • A journal posts the opening float between the cash drawer and the cash-transfer account.
  • You are recorded as the cashier. The sell screen opens, with a message that the session is open.

Worked example

You count one 500 note, five 100 notes, two 50 notes and five 20 notes: 500 + 500 + 100 + 100 = 1,200.00 AED. Counted opening cash shows 1,200.00 and that becomes the session's opening float. If you type a different float as well, the system refuses (see below).

Good to know

  • If you enter a count, the count becomes the float. Both must agree when both are sent.
  • Opening float cannot be negative: 'Opening float cannot be negative.'
  • If the profile opens on a fixed float of 500.00 and you enter 400.00, the system refuses: 'This register opens on a fixed float of 500.00.'
  • A mismatch between the count and a typed float gives 'The denomination count comes to 1300.00, not 1350.00.'
  • If the register already has a session, the card shows Continue session instead and the system says 'POS01 already has session S-10052 open.' Two people opening at the same moment create exactly one session.
  • A register in maintenance says 'POS01 is maintenance and cannot be opened.'
  • If the register has a secured device, you must open from that device; another browser is refused (see Secure a till device).
  • You can open a session while offline. It is sent when the connection returns; if the system already has a live session for that register, it keeps that one and does not create a second drawer.
  • The session's business date comes from the device clock as a UTC date. Between midnight and 04:00 Dubai time this can still be the previous day, so receipt numbers and the dashboard may fall on that day.

Hand the drawer to the next cashier

A session can pass from one cashier to another without closing. The incoming cashier must be a member of the company. The float stays the same, the first cashier's row gets an end time and the second starts. This is not available on the till screen yet; ask your administrator. The system does not ask the incoming cashier for a PIN or password.
