Move stock between locations and warehouses
Move stock between bins, send it between warehouses through transit, cross-dock arriving goods and send goods to another company of the group.
Before you begin
- Both locations must be internal and not blocked.
- For a warehouse-to-warehouse move, the Transfers through transit switch must be on. For intercompany and cross-docking, the matching switches must be on.
Move stock between two bins
- Open Inventory > Warehouse > Internal transfers and click New transfer.
- Choose From and To. Both must be internal locations; To cannot be the same as From.
- Add lines with product, demand and unit (and lot or serial where tracked).
- Click Save, Confirm, then Check availability.
- Click Validate and enter the done quantity.
The source bin falls and the destination rises. Total stock value does not change and no journal entry is created. If the source is frozen by an open count, validation is refused: 'A-01 is frozen by count <number>. Finish the count first.'
Send stock to another warehouse through transit
- Open Inventory > Planning > Transfer through transit.
- Choose From warehouse and To warehouse. They must differ.
- Optionally enter Scheduled as
YYYY-MM-DD. Blank means today. - Add product lines with quantities.
- Click Create transfers. The message names two transfers: one that ships and one that receives.
- Open Inventory > Warehouse > Internal transfers and validate the shipping transfer when the truck leaves.
- Validate the receiving transfer when the goods arrive.
While in transit the stock keeps its value and still counts as company stock. It lands in the destination only when the second transfer is done.
Cross-docking
Cross-docking sends arriving goods straight to the dock when waiting deliveries need them.
- Open Inventory > Warehouse > Cross-docking and click New rule.
- Choose the Warehouse. Choose a Product or a Category, not both; blank means everything.
- Enter Horizon days (0 to 365): how far ahead a waiting delivery counts.
- Keep Active on and save.
- Validate a receipt of that product. The quantity that waiting deliveries need goes to the dock and is reserved for them; the rest goes to stock.
The Opportunities list shows expected receipts with the quantity waiting deliveries need, and History lists what was cross-docked.
Send goods to another company of the group
- Link the companies first under Inventory > Configuration > Intercompany links. See Set the stock policy, close periods and manage features.
- Open Inventory > Warehouse > Intercompany transfers and click New transfer.
- Choose To company, From warehouse and Their warehouse.
- Add at least one line. The product must be shared with the receiving company. Leave Price blank to use the link's rule (at cost, cost plus markup or list price).
- Click Send.
The system raises your sale and delivery and their purchase and receipt. Their receipt cannot be validated until your delivery is done. You need inventory.intercompany in both companies. Use Cancel only before shipping; a shipped transfer is undone by returning the goods. Write off transit posts the transit value if goods are lost.
Example: goods cost AED 100.00 and the link is cost plus 8.5 percent. The transfer sells at 100.00 x 1.085 = AED 108.50.
Drop shipments
When a sale uses a drop-ship route, the system raises a drop shipment instead of a delivery. Open Inventory > Warehouse > Drop shipments. There is no New button. Confirm it, approve the linked purchase order, then Validate; before that the system says to approve the purchase order first. Our stock does not change. If the customer sends goods back, click Return and choose to send them to the supplier or to one of your warehouses. You cannot return more than was shipped.
Good to know
- A transfer can be split, cancelled while open, and dated only in open months.
- A closed dock cannot be booked.
