Check in, take breaks and read your attendance

Punch in and out, take breaks, work offline, and read your attendance calendar and shifts.

Required permission: ess.attendance, ess.check_in, ess.check_out

Before you begin

  • Your sign-in is linked to your employee record, and HR has assigned you a shift.
  • Your attendance policy decides which methods work, whether your location is needed, and whether you must be inside your work location.

Check in and out

  1. Open Employee Self Service > Attendance. The Today tab shows your punch card.
  2. Click Check In when you start. Allow location if your browser asks.
  3. Click Start Break when you leave for a break and End Break when you return.
  4. Click Check Out at the end of the day.

You can also do this from Home. After checking in, the buttons change to Start Break and Check Out. Times are shown in Dubai time.

The system keeps the order of punches. It refuses 'You have not checked in yet today.', 'You are already checked in.', 'You are on a break - end it first.' and 'You have already checked out today.' On a leave day there are no punch buttons and the status shows On Leave.

Location and geofence

If your policy requires location, the browser's position is read at the moment of the punch only. It is not tracked between punches.

  • With no location: 'Allow location to record attendance here.'
  • Outside your permitted work location when the policy enforces the geofence: 'You are outside your permitted work location. Raise a field duty or remote work correction instead.'
  • Outside but not enforced: the punch is accepted and marked outside the fence (status Remote).

Work offline

If your device is offline when you click Check In, you see 'You are offline. The punch is saved on this device and will be sent when you reconnect.' A counter shows how many punches are waiting. When the connection returns, the punch is sent with its original time and marked offline.

The limits are: a punch older than 72 hours is refused ('An offline punch older than 72 hours needs a correction request.'), a punch in the future is refused ('A punch cannot be in the future.'), and your policy must allow offline punches ('Offline attendance is not allowed for you.').

How worked time is counted

Example: shift 09:00 to 18:00 with a 60-minute break, so the required time is 480 minutes. You check in at 09:00, start a break at 13:00, end it at 13:30 and check out at 18:00. Worked time is 240 + 270 = 510 minutes (8 h 30 m). Break is 30 minutes. Overtime is 510 - 480 = 30 minutes.

Late minutes start after the grace period. With a 09:00 start and 10 minutes of grace, checking in at 09:25 gives 15 late minutes and the status Late. At 09:10 there are none. A night shift belongs to the day it began: a check-in at 22:05 on 1 October and a check-out at 06:10 on 2 October both sit on 1 October.

Read your calendar

  1. Open the Calendar tab and choose a month.
  2. Each day shows one status such as Present, Late, Absent, On Leave, Public Holiday, Weekend or Remote. Future days show Upcoming.
  3. The totals show Worked and Overtime (minutes above the required time on Present and Late days only).
  4. Click a day to see why it has that status. The dialog lists shift, grace, check-in and check-out, late minutes, worked time and the policy.

A day with a check-in on a past date and no check-out shows Missing Punch. A day worked under half the required time and checked out shows Partial Day. To fix a missing punch see Correct your attendance.

My shifts

The My shifts tab shows your current shift, work location and rotation, and the next two weeks. During Ramadan, the Ramadan shift applies and the tab says so.

Good to know

  • If you are a normal employee without a shift, ask HR to assign one.
  • HR sees the same attendance day you see.
